Friday Inspirations

Last week while in the big city for Angela's birthday... Perry and I walked into the garden centre for heavy mil rubber for the pondless waterfall/stream we are building on the hillside in front of the house. The first display caught my eye and my attention..... synthetic grass or artificial turf. Wow this isn't that gross greens stuff we used to have at the camper door this was amazing. I am not sure if I have been under a rock for a few years but I am out and I want this.... Made of nylon with a variation of greens and yellow. It has a natural looking thatch that will never have to be cut. We didn't want any grass at the Lakehouse for simple reasons like who would cut and water it? This far north the grass doesn't grow that lush anyways. We can incorporate this seamlessly into the landscape with ease and enjoy for many years. With real plants and landscaping surrounding the grass I "defy" you to tell the difference. High five to artificial turf!!!! It's the way to go.

Pour all ingredients into a ice filled cocktail shaker. Shake well. Strain & pour into a martini glass. Garnish with a skewer of rainbow Gummy Bears. Personally I prefer only red and orange gummies but what the hey you only live once.

What I am Reading

Something Borrowed & Something Blue
Something Borrowed tells the story of Rachel, a young attorney living and working in Manhattan. Rachel has always been the consummate good girl---until her thirtieth birthday, when her best friend, Darcy, throws her a party. That night, after too many drinks, Rachel ends up in bed with Darcy's fiancĂ©. Although she wakes up determined to put the one-night fling behind her, Rachel is horrified to discover that she has genuine feelings for the one guy she should run from. As the September wedding date nears, Rachel knows she has to make a choice. In doing so, she discovers that the lines between right and wrong can be blurry, endings aren't always neat, and sometimes you have to risk all to win true happiness. Something Borrowed is a phenomenal debut novel that will have you laughing, crying, and calling your best friend.
One of those books you cannot put down and keep wanting  more and lucky for us there was a sequel which I downloaded 5 minutes after I read the last page of "Something Borrowed".
Darcy Rhone thought she had it all figured out: the more beautiful the girl, the more charmed her life. Never mind substance. Never mind playing by the rules. Never mind karma.
But Darcy’s neat, perfect world turns upside down when her best friend, Rachel, the plain-Jane “good girl,” steals her fiancĂ©, while Darcy finds herself completely alone for the first time in her life…with a baby on the way.
Darcy tries to recover, fleeing to her childhood friend living in London and resorting to her tried-and-true methods for getting what she wants. But as she attempts to recreate her glamorous life on a new continent, Darcy finds that her rules no longer apply. It is only then that Darcy can begin her journey toward self-awareness, forgiveness, and motherhood.
Something Blue is a novel about one woman’s surprising discoveries about the true meaning of friendship, love, and happily-ever-after. It’s a novel for anyone who has ever, even secretly, wondered if the last thing you want is really the one thing you need.
After reading the first novel I never could quite accept Darcy as a good person. My mind was quite made up, maybe a third book would have gave me more empathy for her. All said this was another page turner.

What I am Reading

Faking It - Elisa Lorello

After breaking off her engagement, thirty-something writing professor Andi Cutrone abandons New England for her native Long Island to focus on her career and start over. When she meets Devin at a cocktail party, the sight of an honest-to-goodness male escort shocks her—and fascinates her more than a little. Months later, Andi impulsively calls Devin. Over cheesecake in Brooklyn, she offers him a proposition: he will teach her how to be a better lover, and in return, she will give him writing lessons. He agrees, and together they embark upon an intense partnership that proves to be as instructive as it is arousing. For in the midst of lessons in rhetorical theory and foreplay, Andi and Devin delve into deeper questions about truth, beauty, and self, gradually coming face-to-face with the issues at the core of their emotional limitations. Smart, witty, and introspective, Faking It is an engrossing novel about two people discovering their authentic selves. Another great audio book that kept me very interested while staining pine and made the time fly. Loved it.

Travel Gnome Tipsy Martini

Recipe:
                 1 1/2 oz. Hpnotiq
1 oz. Triple Sec or Cointreau
                 1/2 oz. Vodka
Splash of grenadine (you can just use the juice from your maraschino cherries if so desired)
Cherry to garnish if you wanna be fancy foo foo and the sword is fun too for saying "on guard" to your table mates

Shake everything but the grenadine together over ice, and pour it into a 6 oz martini glass.  Now, slowly add the grenadine along the very edge of the glass.  Because it's heavier, if you pour it really slowly, it will sink to the bottom instead of mixing in and form a lower layer… making a gnome-hat effect in the bottom of your martini glass! Like the Travel Velocity Gnomes from The Amazing Race.

Funny Story: One morning  some years ago, when I had  teenagers, I awoke to a beautiful summer day. Perfect for gardening. As I was digging in the dirt I looked up towards the fence and there to my amazement was a creepy little gnome staring back at me. A little startled and very curious as to how he arrived there. As I continued gardening I found another one. Now if you know me you will know I don't care for these creatures at all. Turns out Ashley and friends on a walk home picked them up from a Gnome filled yard to free them from their confines and show them the world. Needless to say the Gnomes were returned after a brief vacation in our yard. Here's to a Gnome free yard...only little woodland animals and birds please.

What I am Reading

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
Ransom Riggs

If you like thrillers that aren't super gory and have a great plot, this is a great book. It's written for young adults but was for me (way past that stage) an intriguing read. It's also creative, using actual vintage photographs and integrating them into the story. It would make a great movie! Really ingenious ideas and implementation. Looking forward to the second book out Jan 2014!
