Favourite Drink Tuesday

I found this recipe while doing my latest favourite thing.... surfing Pinterest. This site has changed my life. Wasted a lot of time but learned a lot of really interesting things, some useful and some not. All entertaining. Perry and I made these last Friday night.....

Sugar  Cookie Martini
1 oz Vodka
1 oz Chocolate Liqueur
2 oz Irish Creme Liqueur
2 oz half & half creme
2 tbsp butterscotch syrup
Candy sprinkles

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker except the sprinkles. Shake well until cold. Pour into martini glass. Garnish with sprinkles. If so desired rim glass with sprinkles or crushed sugar cookies.

Siding the South Side

Snow has arrived early in the frozen north. It is not making any attempt at disappearing for a while longer. I am sad to say that the exterior of the house will now be on hold until the spring.  A big disappointment for us. We can't control mother nature and therefore we must accept it. I think a sign must be made to remember this thought. There is plenty to keep us busy inside for a very long time and I will just think positive that when we begin the exterior again more will have been accomplished in the interior. Maybe my workshop will be finished before the siding is complete.... hmmnn now that is a good thought. Or what about the quilting/scrapbooking bonus room.... another good thought or what about a nice long hot steam in the steam shower?

That is the window I will be able to gaze out while I am sitting at my sewing machine
making fun stuff for nice people!
You can see the 3 windows below which are glass shop windows.

On The Island

I just finished this very very engrossing book yesterday. Then I did something I have never done. I sent off an email to the author Tracey to thank her for writing such a wonderful novel and to tell her how much I enjoyed the characters and their story. She wrote me back thanking me for my kind words. Now why did Shawn Cassidy not write me back when I was 13????

I am eagerly awaiting her 2nd book "Covet"'s release.

Check out her blog too, she has a great sense of humour.

What I Wore Wednesday

I am not sure if I can continue with the What I Wore Wednesday because what I wear really sucks and I am pretty sure that it is of very little interest to anyone. I am a mixed media artist waiting patiently for my workshop to be complete so I can go back to a normal life working and creating. My clothes are very very casual and kinda bla unless I am dressing up for an occasion!! Carharts, jeans & a hoodie, building a house is very quickly getting old. Delay after delays. There are only so many jobs onsite that Perry and I can do ourselves without the professionals to help. So I think instead of this being a weekly addition to my blog I will make it an occasional one instead and how about if I add What We Ate Wednesday instead. Tomorrow night I plan on making the Parmesan Meatball recipe I pinned last week with spaghetti and a green salad. Protein and carbs for Perry before his first hockey game of the season. Aw I am jealous!! I miss my FSJ hockey team and all the fun we had winning the single "A" BC Provincials and kicking some serious Alberta butt all winter long. Go Eagles.....
Stir frying olive oil, mushrooms, carrots, onions & the last of my heirloom garden tomatoes. Fold into brown basmati rice and black beans. Baked in the oven along side the chicken legs... mmmmnn yummy supper along side Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Claret
Life is good and kinda healthy...

Siding Update

Despite the weather delays and backordered supplies the siding is coming along nicely. The crew finished up the north side of the house on Tuesday and it looks great. There is still metal soffits and fascia to be installed on the bump out roof of the north deck. But no worries as the pot light cans have to be installed before the roof fascia can be installed and the electricians are waiting on plumbers before they show up again. Sometimes I think the sub trades really do annoy each other just for their own enjoyment.....

Now you can imagine the 8" of snow that arrived yesterday.... well at least they moved from the north side of house to the south side.

Up-Cycling a Mirror

I started a project today finally..... a mirror that I want to stand on the top of the tv entertainment centre between my collection of churchy birdhouses. It was a pale blue and I am painting it Bahama blue.  Dark brown dry brush over the blue and finish with a couple coats of varathane.
Step 1 - Base coat with acrylic paint let dry
Step 2 - Dry brush a dark umber brown acrylic paint over the blue until  you achieve the most pleasing effect possible and let dry
Step 3 - Brush on 2 coats of Diamond Coat Varathane (my personal favorite for almost everything including all the windows in the new house)

Our morning began at 4:00 am. Time to get up and get ready to be at the airport by 5 for our 6 am West Jet flight to Grande Prairie. Perry and I were pumped. Mom and Dad Thomas drove us thru the dark empty streets to our departure gate. Hugs and goodbyes; we were on our way. The 50 minute flight to Calgary was uneventful and quick. Making the best of a 4 hr layover we ate a healthy "not" breakfast at Timmy's. Read, relaxed, chatted and shopped at the Life Is Good store. New hat and long sleeve T! Boarded on time for our flight to GP via Edmonton. This is where the trip starts to tumble downhill. Approximately 5 minutes after takeoff at about 20,000 feet we smelled smoke. The intensity continued to increase. The flight attendants rushed back and forth up and down the aisles. The one attendant grabbed an extinguisher and ran part of the way down past us seated in row 4 E & F. She then returned to grab the phone and speak anxiously into it. Her composure was disintegrating before our disbelieving eyes. We could smell her fear but barely above the acrid smell of smoke. They finally announced that something was burning towards the middle of the plane but they were unable to locate the source. Another few minutes ensued and the captain announced that we were returning to Calgary. I hoped against hope that the wheels had engaged. Who knew that the thump bump of the wheels hitting the runway would feel so good. We disembarked with only positive thoughts that we would soon be back on our way. But at 3:00 our hopes were shattered. Our flight was cancelled, a second crew was mia, rerouting would take over 24 hrs. So with saddened hearts we decided to head back home. They should and I say should with a question mark behind it....... They should have us back into Saskatoon by 9 pm this evening. 17 hours since our adventure began.

Do not pass go, do not collect $200....... But we did collect $60 worth of food vouchers which did not include alcoholic beverages unfortunately!!! Perry in his eagerness to pay for our drinks along with our food forgot the vouchers. We were still anticipating the continuation of our trip at that time. So we offered 2 of them to a nice girl beside us thinking Pay it Forward or a random act of kindness
would only help us in our quest to arrive at our final destination in a timely manner. But alas it was not to be.

Our heartfelt apologies to Ashley and Danny for not making it this time. We will reschedule hopefully in November. So a fun time can be had by all on West Jets dime too. Love you guys talk soon.

What I Wore Wednesday

Crazy as it sounds but there is a myriad of blogs out there that are doing this. High styling women & some men say the more they post the better they start to look & dress as they critique themselves. Like a food diary kinda. So why not... my new addition will be What I Wore Wednesday and I will be linking it to the actual "What I Wore Wednesday" blog. Enjoy.... this bit of random fluff.

Favourite Drink Tuesday

The drink I have been sipping a lot lately (not including wine) is Tazo Chai tea mixed with milk half and half. 2 minutes in the microwave. Tastes as close to the one in StarBucks as I have found. These 3 pack tetra boxes were purchased at Costco. Warms you right up on a cool blustery day. Mmmnnnnnn....

Home is Where the Heart Is...

Hansen Lake Road
Back and forth, back and forth.... Per & I are wearing a groove into the highway between the Lakehouse and our 2nd home our condo in Melfort. So I was driving home to the condo on Monday afternoon and along with a zillion things swirling around my head. ..Yes I was still paying attention to my driving... I realized how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the world. I spent the last 20 odd years in 5 different spectacular areas of BC. I thought those really were the be all end all places to live. But you know home is where the heart is and my heart belongs here.

We are very lucky as Canadians to live in such a safe and secure country. My heart goes out to the people of Mali in Africa. The atrocities that are being forced upon them as the Islamic militants force the nation to bow down to their small minded ideals removing their basic rights as citizens and humans.

Back of House Sided - Check

The boys finished siding the back of the house on Friday just in time to to head out of the bush to the big city. Out of the great white north I should say. Why are we the only ones with snow is what I want to know. We are very happy with how it looks. It is really too bad it is gonna be too cool for any rock work this fall. Absolutely love love  love the shakes. The top dormer windows will be shakes too. Hopefully when Per and I return from our trip to FSJ the majority of the house will be sided. Then the deck is screaming to be finished. We bought Fiberon composite decking in keeping with the no upkeep on the exterior of the house. The main color Ipe is kinda two toned and should go nicely with the wood color of the doors, the secondary color is Tudor Brown and will tie in with the dark brown of the windows and pillars. I very much doubt we will have railings until next summer and that will be fine. Only fall 5 feet!!

The bump out that is shaked there is for my china buffet/hutch. I had the electricians install a plug in so I can hang my 2 tier lion water fountain. Cannot wait to hang that but I guess I will have to wait till the deck is built on the back side so the guys don't accidentally knock it off or something. It is hard to wait to begin decorating our nest. I love winter but man I wish spring was imminent.

Siding Coming Along

The sun has been playing peekaboo all day long while the boys have been hard at "er" installing the siding on the back side of the house. The lovely temperature is hovering around 0 Celsius with little snow squalls on and off all day. I am feeling a little sorry for them out there working in this but I do want a warm home for the winter more.

The first picture shows the south east corner of the house. My workshop side, oh yes Perry more of my side done before your side ooops!!! You can see on this next one that they are working on the kitchen part of the house and the second floor now. Unfortunately for us with the inclement weather the rock work will have to wait for spring/summer of 2o13. So as much as this lovely housewrap was supposed to be all hidden by winter, sadly it will not. Maybe I should slap a coat of brown paint on the wrap lol?? Or maybe I will only cover up the name Nelson Homes wrap cos they SUCK majorly big time. More of this later. The third picture is a closeup of the garage door just cos the sun was shining so nicely on the stained glass I had to include it with the others. These are All Weather Doors and they are very well made fibreglass doors. We love them. I programmed the codes for the door locks yesterday. Kind of exciting. You can program 2 codes, one for guests/workers and one for just Perry and I.

Weather Delays

On the road again. Monday morning Perry and I headed up to the lake and only to be greeted by the fluffy white stuff along the highway. A little bit early for northern Saskatchewan and not very welcome. The carpenters should have been finishing up the house siding but I am thinking that this will delay the process  a few more days. Warmer weather is on the way right? The Hardie Board siding that they have installed looks phenomenal. The shakes, two sizes and colors of trim add interest to the plank siding. Sadly the rock siding will have to be installed next spring/summer, concrete has a weather window and it has passed unless we want to work behind parachute tarps like you see on new construction in the cities in the winter. Thank you but no thank you. So turn up the heat this trailer life is getting old or should I say cold?

Confusion & Indecision

On a gray and cloudy Thanksgiving Sunday I decided to give blogging another try. Let me see this is my fourth attempt I believe. Between texting with Ashley we got this one up and running. Thank you sweet pea for helping me with my  headers and labels etc. This blog will entail what the other ones I built were about and a little bit more. I love following blogs I stumble upon and often enjoy a few laughs at the humor of the authors. I have found some of the best craft and home ideas accidentally on their blogs. My blog will be about the building of our dream home at Little Bear Lake, my interests and thoughts, my family, what I am reading, my work as a stained glass artist and whatever else I feel like putting out there in the world. So stay tuned and have patience while I improve my blogging skills.

Today is my daughter-in-law Megan's 26th birthday..... Her first as my  daughter-in-law. She married my my son Brandon in December 2011. So Happy Happy Birthday Megan. Have a wonderful day.

Cutting For Stone

Cutting for Stone - Abraham Verghese
I just began this book yesterday and haven't had much time to get into it. Will write more about it as I read. Sounds interesting.
